Cast iron cookware has been a favourite of cooks for many years. Its ability to go from stovetop to oven makes it a great addition to your kitchen. Be sure to properly prepare and care for your cast iron with these
simple steps.

Seasoning (prior to use)
Heat your oven to 250º to 300º.
Coat the pan with grease (lard or bacon fat – do not use liquid oils)
Place pan in oven for 15 minutes, remove and pour out excess grease.
Return pan to oven and bake for 2 hours.

Season your pan several times to create a better seasoning bond. New cast iron is grey, but over time it becomes black.

Caring for Cast Iron Cookware
After use, you can wash with dishwashing detergent and water, but never soak in soapy water. Immediately dry with paper towels. (Note: some cooks do not believe in using soap, but any leftover grease can become rancid.) Never place cast iron in the dishwasher.

The key to an efficient kitchen is organization. Keeping stock of what’s in your pantry, and being able to access your utensils and cookware easily makes prep time fly.

Cookware: Attractive pots can hang suspended from ornamental racks making
them part of your décor as well as keeping them out of your precious cupboard space. Attach wire baskets to the sides of your cupboards (either inside or out), to store pot lids. If you have the room, install sliding pot drawers to keep everything handy.
Utensils: Avoid the “junk drawer” syndrome by installing drawer dividers or low metal baskets. Be sure to remove and clean often. Knives shouldn’t be stored loose in drawers.
Pantry: Keep “like-minded” foodstuffs together. For example, keep a basket of powdered mixes together, so you can remove them and leaf through when cooking or preparing your grocery lists.
Appliances: Make life easier for yourself when setting up your kitchen. Pay attention to your “work triangle”. Keep your path free to move easily between stove, microwave, fridge and sink. Store your dishes near your dishwasher for easy unloading.
Prep Area: Position your mixing bowls, blender, cutting boards, measuring cups and cooking utensils near the area you will be preparing your meals.
